ASTORIA, Queens — The smell of the Puerto Rican dish Mofongo is a regular feature inside the kitchen at The Freakin’ Rican Restaurant in Astoria.
Despite revenue down by 50%, executive chef and owner Derick Lopez says he’s thankful to still be open to serve his community.
“I think we will be fine,” Lopez told PIX11. “It’s just extra work on our part but I mean these situations make you think outside of the box.”
At a restaurant where the focus was always the dine-in experience, statewide shutdowns due to the outbreak has made takeout and delivery a priority. Lopez even purchased a new electric bike to make deliveries.
Thankfully, a loyal social media following paired with an online marketplace has allowed them to stay afloat.
“Instead of them coming into the store they just go to the website and they order Sofrito, adobo, pasteles,” Lopez said. “[Its all] shipped to their door because we do nationwide shipping.”
The authentic Puerto Rican menu not only keeps their kitchen busy but their phones ringing off the hook.
On June 2, Lopez plans to pay it forward by offering up a free meal to-go to anyone in need.
