NUTLEY, NJ — As the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc across New Jersey, Mike Cosenza and Mike Carrino of Mike’s Pasta & Sandwich Shoppe in Nutley didn’t bat an eye.
Instead, the duo hatched a plan that would help the most vulnerable in the community while keeping those on the front lines fed.
“Heros For Heroes is the campaign that we started,” Carrino said. “To do some sandwich donations to our first responders and hospitals and all of a sudden customers started to, they heard what we were doing and they wanted to jump on board.”
Donations for their campaign soon flooded in, allowing them to serve health care workers and first responders from several hospitals and agencies across Passaic, Essex Bergen and Hudson counties. It also kept their popular neighborhood deli open and busy.
“When you don’t have anymore to give, you just give some more,” Cosenza told PIX11. “It’s been a really really good thing for us to have this platform to be able to help people.”
When they’re not feeding front-line workers, they’re serving up deli favorites, including fried eggplant and chicken cutlet sandwiches and, of course, their homemade pasta that has spawned off its own fan club.
Mike’s Pasta & Sandwich Shoppe is open Tuesday through Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. for takeout and delivery. They’re located at:
