UNION CITY, NJ — The grand opening of their restaurant Chofi Taco y Birria in Union City was the day Patrick and Kim Flammia had worked tirelessly for.
After investing their life savings, the couple opened the authentic Mexican restaurant on March 14.
“It was that good energy of being really busy,” Patrick Flammia said, recalling opening day. “It was awesome.”
Two days later, their dream restaurant was forced to shut down. Governor Murphy ordered restaurants statewide to close, restricting them to only takeout and delivery.
“It was heartbreaking. We put all these years and all this time and love into this concept and we felt like we didn’t even get a chance,” Patrick Flammia said.
Despite the set back, the New Jersey couple is persistent, keeping their kitchen open, taking orders and say they refuse to go down without a fight.
“This is definitely going to make us stronger, for sure,” he said.
The menu is already a hit with many in the neighborhood. Some customer favorites include the Quesotaco Birria, Mushroom & Pepper Quesadilla and Carne Norteña.
Chofi Taco Y Birria is located at 1706 Summit Avenue in Union City. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday starting at 2p for takeout and delivery.
