Small Business Spotlight

When you think about industries that have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, ‘newborn photography’ isn’t one that jumps out first.

And yet, Jessie Marrero, a New Jersey native and photographer of babies as young as three days old, says her business has been as hard hit as any by COVID-19.

“I’ve always loved babies, and I’ve always loved art, so I combined the two with my profession,” Marrero said.

Marrero has been practicing photography for the past 12 years.

“New life gives me life,” Marrero said. “They each have a story, and being able to be a part of that is a wonderful feeling.”

But her last photography session was on March 13. Previously, she was doing two newborn photoshoots a day. But, since COVID-19 hit and New Jersey mandated its social distancing orders, Marrero says her studio has remained closed. In fact, she has lost all business for the months of March, April and May.

“I had to tell these parents, ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t do it.’ I had to return funds, and parents lost that moment that I get to capture of their first days with their babies.’

Still, she’s trying to help new moms by doing FaceTime tutorials and using video software like Zoom to coach families to capture those special moments themselves. When she is able to resume, Marrero says she has Personal Protective Equipment, thermometers, and plenty of Lysol to keep the studio squeaky clean for babies.

“Sometimes I think my studio is cleaner than a hospital,” she said. “These are tiny, tiny, brand new babies. So I take every precaution.”

And for new moms, Marrero leaves this advice:

“Embrace every second. It is so important, and those babies change day by day.”
