CAMBRIA HEIGHTS, Queens — An alleged carjacker is dead in Queens after Nassau County police opened fire while conducting an operation, a high-ranking law enforcement source told PIX11 News.

Nassau officers found the suspect in Cambria Heights and shot at the accused carjacker, sources said. The suspect, who was struck by police gunfire, crashed into a building.

Laron Joseph said he was near the scene Tuesday afternoon when he first heard a big boom and then gun shots.

"I thought someone got hit by a car or something, but that wasn't the case at all. I saw the bullet in the door," he said. "I saw them pulling the person out of the car ... they laid the person on the ground."

The FDNY confirmed they responded to a shooting at Linden Boulevard and 217th Street.

The NYPD directed requests for information to the Nassau County Police Department. They are not investigating the shooting, even though it happened in Queens. The NYPD did help process the scene.
