NEW YORK — Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is endorsing the Democratic primary challenger of a veteran House committee chairman.
Ocasio-Cortez is backing local educator Jamaal Bowman over 16-term congressman Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Engel's New York district is in parts of the Bronx and Westchester. That's next door to the district of Ocasio-Cortez, who represents portions of the Bronx and Queens.
Her move means she is taking on House Democratic leaders, who by tradition support incumbents when they are challenged in party primaries.
Ocasio-Cortez says, “The moment requires renewed and revitalized leadership.”
