NEW PALTZ — The Ulster County community of New Paltz is dealing with a water disaster, with tap water unsafe to drink.

The cause, according to New Paltz Mayor Tim Rogers: a third party contractor accidentally ruptured an underground heating oil line last fall near one of the town's four reservoirs, sending the fuel seeping into the ground, and eventually, into the drinking water.

The campus at SUNY New Paltz was shut down, classes canceled, and emergency tankers were set up to provide temporary access to clean drinking water.
