News Closeup: Bail reform law; coronavirus

The battle over bail reform in New York continues, one month after the new law took effect.

The law eliminates cash bail for low level crimes. Democratic lawmakers viewed the old system as discriminatory. But many say the new law is allowing violent criminals to go free and needs to be modified. We hear both sides of the debate from Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis and NYCLU Policy Counsel Nicole Triplett.

This week, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global health emergency. This comes as the number of confirmed cases grows to nearly 10,000 worldwide with more than 200 deaths reported. So far, at least eight cases have been identified in the United States and health officials have confirmed the first person to person contraction of the virus.
