PARAMUS, N.J. — Dozens of couples in New Jersey married for 50 years or longer came together to renew their vows on Thursday.
Fred and Margaret Sortino have been married for 69 years. PIX11 asked what their secret is to making the relationship last.
"We get along, we don’t fight much," said Fred.
"Overlooking the little things, they don’t matter," said Margaret.
The vow renewal ceremony was put together by Stew Leonard’s in Paramus Park Mall.
Paramus Mayor Rich LaBarbiera officiated.
Hand in hand, each couple locked eyes and recommitted themselves to marriage.
Some remembered the moment they knew their partner was "the one."
"I took one look at him and that was it," said Maryanne Uzzi.
Some say a long-lasting relationship defies the odds, but turns out the odds may actually be in your favor.
In the U.S. the divorce rate has actually been trending down, decreasing by 18% between 2008 and 2016.
"For me, it’s been easy. You know, do you know when to pick your battles?" said Uzzi.
"And sometimes the answer, 'yes dear' is exactly right," said John, Uzzi's husband of 51 years.
The couples sealed their vows with a kiss and a champagne toast.
