EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A teen died after he fell through the ice of a pond in East Brunswick on Wednesday night, police said.
The 13-year-old victim and two others fell into the pond shortly before 5 p.m., officials said. The other teens managed to get out by themselves. Patrol units responded, formed a chain and entered the pond to try and help the trapped teen.
He slipped under the ice before they could reach him.
The teen was eventually pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, police said. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Six police officers and two firefighters involved in the rescue efforts needed to be treated for hypothermia.
