CHELSEA, Manhattan — One construction worker is dead and another hospitalized after a fire extinguisher exploded at a Manhattan building Wednesday morning, officials said.

According to police, the call came in around 8:20 a.m. for the incident at 341 Ninth Ave, between West 29th and 30th streets in Chelsea.

The address is the location of a large U.S. Postal Service facility.

Authorities said one worker was killed in the explosion and a second worker was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

Police believe two NYPD officers seriously injured in a nearby collision with a civilian vehicle around 8:45 a.m. were possibly responding to the explosion.

The civilian driver in that incident was also hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.
