KENSINGTON, Brooklyn — A man is in police custody after his mother was found dead in her Brooklyn apartment Monday night, the NYPD said.

According to police, around 10 p.m. officers found the 77-year-old woman unconscious, with injures to her head, in her her apartment on East 7th Street, between Ditmas Avenue and Courtelyou Road, in the Kensington area of Brooklyn.

EMS responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Authorities said the woman, identified as Marie Louis, appeared to have been bludgeoned to death.

Louis' 36-year-old son was taken into custody at the home without incident Monday night, police said.

Authorities said no weapon was discovered at the scene and it is currently unclear what she might have been hit with.

According to police, the man is considered to be emotionally disturbed and officials are looking into the man's mental health history. He is being observed at a local hospital.

The incident has been deemed a homicide, police said.
