MIDWOOD, Brooklyn — A young girl is dead and a firefighter was hospitalized after flames ripped through the girl's Brooklyn home late Monday night, according to authorities.
Police said a call came in around 10:30 p.m. for a fire inside a three-story home on Ocean Parkway, right near the corner of Foster Avenue in on the border of the Midwood and Kensington neighborhoods.
Large flames could be seen shooting out of the home's windows at its peak. The fire was placed under control just before midnight, the FDNY said.
Upon extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered 11-year-old Shirr Teved unconscious and unresponsive in her burned-out home, officials said.
EMS rushed Teved to a local hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead.
A firefighter battling the blaze was also hospitalized with serious injuries, the FDNY said.
The FDNY said the fire does not appear to be suspicious but the fire marshal will determine the cause of the fire.
The medical examiner will determine the girl's exact cause of death, police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
