PARKCHESTER, the Bronx — Police are looking for the driver of a Toyota SUV they say fled the scene after a man was fatally struck crossing a Bronx street Wednesday night.

Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to a 911 call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and discovered a man lying in the road on Beach Avenue, near Mansion Street. He was unconscious and unresponsive with visible head injuries, the NYPD said.

EMS rushed the man to a local hospital where he was soon pronounced dead.

According to the NYPD, further investigation revealed that a blue or silver Toyota RAV4 SUV with a New Jersey license plate was driving southbound on Beach Avenue when it struck the victim, who was crossing the street in the middle of the block, outside of any marked crosswalks.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene, continuing southbound on Beach Avenue, police said.

The Daily News reported that the driver was believed to be chasing another vehicle when it struck the man, but the NYPD could not confirm this information to PIX11.

There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

The identity of the victim was not immediately released.
