CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — A special grand jury will investigate the case of an 8-year-old boy who died of hypothermia while in the custody of his father.
Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini said Monday the panel will issue a special report on the January death of Thomas Valva. Authorities have said Valva died after he was forced to sleep in an unheated garage as temperatures dropped to under 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 6 Celsius).
New York Police Department officer Michael Valva and his fiancée Angela Pollina have been charged with second-degree murder in the boy's death.
They deny any wrongdoing.
