New York launched COVID-19 testing in churches across the state last week.

St. Paul Community Baptist Church in East New York is helping facilitate testing in their neighborhood.

But at the church, people get more than just a COVID-19 test.

They also get a special blessing from the pastor, and a message: the community cares.

Rev. David Brawley heads the church and said testing is needed, but so is spiritual healing.

“As clergy, we do the funerals and soul care. We are intimately knowledgeable about what’s infecting people and the affects of COVID-19,” Brawley said.

Over five hundred people were tested in the first week.

Brawley said he believes testing is an opportunity, not to just to improve the health of his community, but to reconnect.

Before each test, Brawley offers a blessing and a message of hope.

With each COVID-19 test, he said there's a chance to reach the soul.

“My job is to listen,” said he said.

St. Paul Community Baptist Church in East New York will continue to do COVID-19 testing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
