HUNTINGTON, NY — A Suffolk County town is putting residents on a diet to fight coronavirus.

Obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure make people with COVID-19 more vulnerable, Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer said. The Healthy Huntington lifestyle program, which is completely voluntary, will include exercise classes and advice on how to combat weight gain.

"Emotional eating and lack of physical activity is to be expected, but the goal is to not let it take control of us," Spencer, chair of the Legislature’s Health Committee, said.

Dr. David Buchin, director of bariatric surgery at Huntington Hospital, will oversee the program.

"I'm hoping that we start off with Huntington and it kind of spreads across the country because it's a very serious thing," he said. "COVID-19, you're twice as likely to have a poor outcome if you're obese. So it's very important that we get fit and we get healthier."

Free online classes will be offered by Intelligent Fitness and Blue Lotus Center for Yoga and the Arts.
