THE BRONX — This Juneteenth, Bronx NYCHA tenants celebrated a special homecoming for a housing hero who was hospitalized with COVID-19 for over three months.
William Lawery, a much loved tenant leader at the Highbridge Houses, was hospitalized for months battling the virus.
“I appreciate all the love,” said Lawery.
Food and homemade signs greeted the Bronx champion of the people. In the crowd on 116th Street was family, friends, and over a dozen NYCHA tenant presidents.
“Coming home, and on the day of Juneteenth, it’s very fitting,” said Daniel Barber, the president of the citywide council of presidents.
Now that Lawery is back home, he has a lot of work to do, continuing to fight for tenant rights and housing equality.
