NEW YORK CITY — The NYPD said it will begin taking some police officer temperatures Wednesday as the coronavirus crisis continues to take a toll on the force.

The pilot program starts at just one precinct in each borough but the NYPD told PIX11 Wednesday they hope to expand quickly.

According to police, the thermometers were sent out Friday to city agencies by the mayor's office.

According to the New York Post, there were 6,380 members of the NYPD out sick as of Monday, nearly 17% of the department, with 2,334 officers testing positive for COVID-19.

Five officers and 19 civilian NYPD employees have succumbed to coronavirus thus far.
