NEW YORK — An NYPD communications technician is the latest member of the force to succumb to coronavirus, the department has announced.

Ava Walker, 56, died on March 31 from COVID-19-related complications, the NYPD said Tuesday.

Assigned to the NYPD's Communications Section and on the force for just over 20 years, Walker joined the NYPD in September 1999.

"Our hearts are heavy as we vow to #neverforget Ava & all of our brave NYPD family members lost to the coronavirus," Police Commissioner Dermot Shea wrote on Twitter.

Walker is now the 14th member of the NYPD to die from the virus.

The NYPD said 2,006 uniformed members and 338 civilian members have tested positive for COVID-19.

As of Tuesday, over 7,000 uniformed members of the NYPD were on sick report, accounting for 20% of the department's uniformed workforce, officials said.

Correction: Walker's age has been updated to reflect that she died at the age of 56.
