CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn — Coney Island beaches are open for swimming on this Independence Day but because of the COVID-19 crisis, concession stands along the famed boardwalk are only open for to-go food and cocktails.

Parks department employees were busy handing out masks and gloves and the social distancing signs are everywhere but are people actually keeping six feet apart on the sand and in the surf?

Some people are maintaining their social distance but the closer you got to the ocean the more crowded it was on the sand.

With the mayor opening 14 miles of city beaches just four days ago, New York certified only 512 lifeguards instead of the usual more than 600.

It’s such a tough job because so many people were so crowded together on the beach and in the water on this holiday.
