TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a new executive order Friday in an attempt to protect renters during the coronavirus pandemic.
Murphy's order allows renters to direct landlords to use their security deposits to pay rent to either make up for shortfalls in rent or pay it in full.
Many have called for rent forgiveness and freezes. The state has already announced a mortgage freeze during the crisis.
Over 100,000 New Jerseyans have contracted and over 5,000 have died from COVID-19.
