STATEN ISLAND — An Amazon worker at the Staten Island fulfillment center died of coronavirus.
The man, who has not been identified, was diagnosed on April 11 and was last at work on April 5. His death comes after protests by Amazon workers over work during the COVID-19 outbreak.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of an associate at our site in Staten Island, NY," Amazon spokeswoman Lisa Levandowski said in an email. "His family and loved ones are in our thoughts, and we are supporting his fellow colleagues.”
The infection rate at the facility is lower than the rate in the community, according to Amazon. State data shows there have been more than 600 deaths in the county.
