TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A New Jersey shopping mall store employee was spat at and struck with a belt after asking two customers to pull up their masks earlier this month, authorities said.

Toms River police said a man and woman entered a Zumiez in the Ocean County mall shortly after 3 p.m. on July 9 with face coverings around their necks.

When the female employee asked them to wear the masks, the man became irate and snapped a belt at the worker, striking her once, police said. The man's female companion spit at the worker before both left, police said.

Police searched the area without finding them, and their investigation continues.
