BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn — Dr. Arabia Mollette works in Brookdale Hospital’s Emergency Room, which she now calls “a warzone, a medical warzone.” But now, that warzone is getting a new tool in the fight against COVID-19.

Every inch of space is valuable inside Brookdale as they treat a never ending stream of coronavirus patients.

“We need prayer, we need support, we need gowns,” Dr. Mollette explains.

Despite the overwhelming obstacles, they have one advantage: Brookdale was the first hospital in Brooklyn to begin using a rapid COVID-19 test in their own lab: results take as little as 6 hours.

Before, Brookdale was only able to test 50 patients a day.

"Right now, we're doing 300 a day. But we have the ability to go upwards of 500 patients a day“ explained Senior Vice President William Bifulco.

The rapid test was developed by Abbott Labs, and Bifulco explains “there was a lot of more well known facilities that they could have focused on, but they instead focused on real hot spot, which is Brooklyn, Queens.”
