MONTAUK, N.Y. — Scientists will look into what killed a humpback whale found floating off the southeastern eastern tip of Long Island.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society says the 30-foot-long female whale was brought to a Montauk beach Friday.

She was spotted Wednesday about six miles offshore from Montauk Point. The Coast Guard and East Hampton Town police helped bring the animal in.

The conservation society says the whale was fairly decomposed, and her age and the date and cause of her death aren’t clear. Once the animal is in a safe, secure place, a necropsy will be performed.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been more humpback whale deaths than usual along the U.S. Atlantic Ocean coast since 2016.

The AMCS is reminding everyone to report any sightings of dead or distressed marine animals to the NYS Stranding Hotline at (631) 369-9829.
