On Dec. 7, the two imposters dressed in work clothes and safety vests, entered the residential building near East 112th Street and Madison Avenue shortly after 12 p.m. and knocked on an apartment door, police said.

A man, 56, answered and the two men allegedly told him they were New York City Housing Authority workers. The man opened the door and the imposters barged in, police said. One imposter held out a gun and struck the man in the head.

They restrained the man and demanded cash, according to police. The two imposters fled the apartment with $500 in cash and two cellphones, police said.

The man was taken to the hospital and treated for a laceration above his left eye.

One imposter was described as a man about 6 feet 1 inch and 290 pounds. The other imposter was described as a man about 6 feet 2 inches and 140 pounds.

Surveillance video captured the two walking through the building's lobby.
