KEENE, N.Y. — A pair of young hikers have been found alive after they spent two days lost in the Adirondack High Peaks region while hiking to the summit of the state’s second-highest mountain, New York officials said.

Amid deep snow and sub-freezing temperatures, rangers and a state police aviation unit found Madison Popolizio, 19, and Blake Alois, 20, both of Niskayuna in Schenectady County, on Algonquin Peak, a 5,115-foot mountain about 10 miles south of Lake Placid, Department of Environmental Conservation said Tuesday afternoon.

DEC said rangers are working to evacuate the hikers from the mountain. A DEC official said there’s no immediate word on the couple’s condition.

Officials said a DEC dispatcher received a call around 5:40 p.m. Sunday from family members reporting they hadn’t heard from the hikers since about noon.
