NEW YORK — LIRR and Metro-North riders heading to SantaCon this weekend will have to wait to start the party once they arrive in the city.
The MTA is banning alcohol on both train lines and in train stations starting at noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday, according to a news release.
The time frame of this weekend’s alcohol ban overlaps with the LIRR’s usual ban on alcohol between midnight and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
MTA police will be out and about at stations throughout the region, including Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal, to enforce the weekend ban. They will confiscate beverages and if they find any naughty Santas indulging in more than just holiday spirit, will issue summonses carrying fines or imprisonment, or even kick them off trains or out of stations, according to a news release.
The MTA said both railroads will occasionally impose alcohol bans for the safety of customers and train crews.
