All northbound lanes of FDR Drive reopen after car catches fire

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — All northbound lanes of the FDR Drive on the Upper East Side have reopened after a car caught on fire Sunday evening.

The car caught on fire near E. 96th Street on the northbound side around 5:45 p.m.

The fire was extinguished by 6:15 p.m.

By 6:40 p.m., all lanes had reopened.

Users of the community-based traffic app Waze posted about the traffic, writing that it was a standstill. The app showed traffic backed up more than 40 blocks near the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.

The FDNY said there were no injuries.

Drivers are urged to seek other routes.
