Four years ago, two friends decided it was time to get involved and help their community and the city they love.  They formed New York Initiative NYI).  NYI is a group of professionals with a very clear mission: to empower and protect people. And today, NYI has grown into so much more.   The group patrols the streets of NYC to help citizens feeling safe.

It’s their belief  that it’s time to work on the idea of violence prevention AND after the fact enforcement. This means training for at-risk area populations, and trained citizens protecting their streets. Central enforcement alone does not work to protect people, and we need to have groups more focused on tension de-escalation rather than brute force.

They’re not sanctioned by the police but they do try to assist the NYPD when they can.  Of course, the word vigilante does comes up when talking about this grassroots group, but these guys are all about peace and making New Yorkers more aware of what’s going on around them.

NYI will be hosting a self-defense seminar at Tompkins Square Park on July 7th at 4pm.  They are opening a school, the Initiative Academy… it will have parkour, martial arts, de-escalation, tactical scenario games, etc. , and will double as a charity art gallery, community center, neighborhood watch training center.

The group is currently recruiting–looking for peaceful warriors ready to step up and stop the madness.  For more on their upcoming activities and to join, check them out on facebook.
