Seminole County, FLORIDA (PIX11)– Jury selection starts Monday.

George Zimmerman is on trial for the February 26th 2012 murder of teenager Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman was a self appointed neighborhood watchman in his gated Sanford Florida community, he called police to saying he was following a “real suspicious person.”  The 29-year-old disregarded a police dispatchers advice to stop his pursuit of Martin.

He later got into a sturggle with Martin and shot him in the chest.

The 17-year-old Martin was a guest of a homeowner in the gated community and was on his way back from a local convenience store after buying candy and iced tea.

Civil Rights activists contended Martin was murdered because he was a black kid wearing a hoody in a predominantly white neighborhood.

Zimmerman claimed Martin went after him, punched him in the face and was slamming his head against a sidewalk when he shot him.

Later Trayvon Martin’s character was called into question after pictures surfaced of him smoking pot.

The trial is expected to last four to eight weeks.
