Lawmakers are defending their decision to obtain customer’s phone records from Verizon.

Verizon has been handing over the call logs as part of the Patriot Act for at least seven years. But before any particular caller can be scrutinized, counter-terrorism officials have to get additional permission from a secret national security court.

Senator Diane Feinstein says it’s a necessary action. Feinstein adds that this is a three month renewal of the practice which has been in place the last seven years.
