BROOKLYN (PIX11) — Cops are looking to the public for help in putting a band of carjackers out of business. The NYPD has issued a Citywide Carjacking Alert and they want the public to help them catch the suspects  before someone gets hurt.

There were at least 7 incidents in May, that’s equals about 2 every week.  Cops say the thugs are targeting high end vehicles like Mercedes, BMW, AND Range Rovers.

In a couple of cases they have bumped a car with another high end make and then when the driver got out to check the damage ripped off his car. In one case a driver was waiting for a car at a car wash when a thief jumped into the car and took off. Three times these guys have used a gun or a knife and in another case they simply threatened a driver.

All of the carjackings were in Brooklyn or Staten Island. Two of the cars were recovered in Newark, another was found in a container headed to Togo, Africa.

If you know anything you are asked to call crime stoppers hotline number at 1800-577-TIPS.
