TRENTON (PIX11) — Governor Chris Christie appointed New Jersey State Attorney General Jeffery Chiesa as the state’s interim United States Senator Thursday in wake of the seat’s vacancy.

Prior to becoming the state’s Attorney General, Chiesa has served as Chief Counsel to Christie.

Chiesa fills in for the late Senator Frank Lautenberg who passed away Monday at the age of 89. Lautenberg, a Democrat was the oldest member of the U.S. Senate.

According to Christie, Chiesa will only temporarily fill the seat and has no plans on seeking the office in October’s special election.
