New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has set a special election in the fall to replace longtime New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who died Monday at the age of 89.
Christie said a primary will be held on Aug. 13, and the general election would take place on Oct. 16.
Lautenberg, a Democrat who was the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, died Monday after complications from viral pneumonia.
Before the election, Christie will appoint a short-term successor. Christie did not say Tuesday whom he intended to pick. The decision will face considerable political scrutiny.
The term for Lautenberg’s seat expires in January 2015.
