SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. (PIX11) — Family and friends trail behind the metallic grey casket of 21-year-old Andrea Rebello, the Hofstra University student killed by a police officer’s stray bullet during a Long Island home invasion.
The 200 mourners today at St. Teresa’s of Avila Church Roman Catholic Church in this Hudson River village were visibly shaken as they cried and embraced, trying to grasp a better understanding of why Andrea died at the hand of an ex-con who used her as a human shield.
Her name, spoken in grief this morning during her funeral service, but more than anything, it was tied with love to a community she impacted.
Sr. Marie Claire, a longtime educator and administrator at St. Teresa’s, spoke fondly of the Rebello she knew.
“She was happy. She was very close to her friends,” she said of Rebello as a youth.
