NEWARK (PIX11) — A witness described chaos and panic after 5 people were shot shortly after 10pm on South 16th in Newark Thursday night.
“I seen a little girl, I seen two guys get into wheel chairs and put into the ambulance, then pretty much screaming and commotion and yelling back and forth and then the police just tried to get everything under control,” said South 16th street resident Tallyn Summers.
“Upon arrival officers located five people suffering gunshot wounds,” said Newark Police Spokesperson Todd McClendon.
Newark Police listed the injured as a 10-year-old girl who was shot in the ankle; a 22-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the buttocks; a 46-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the arm; a 48-year-old man who was shot in both his legs and a 25-year-old man who was shot in the arm.
The victims were listed in stable condition, said police.
Tallyn Summers said police were looking for shell casings in front of 804 South 16th street. He watched the shooting victims being taken from a home across the street at 803 South 16th street. He lives next door.
“It’s time to move. It was quiet up until then. This is really close,” he said.
The Star-Ledger, citing sources, reported the shooting victims were gathered for vigil. They were remembering a victim of a fatal car accident.
Newark Police said the gunman reportedly exited a dark colored vehicle, fired several shots and then re-entered the vehicle and fled the scene.
The suspect was not identified early Friday morning. Newark Police assigned the department’s Major Crimes Unit to the case.
Police are asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information can call 1-877-NWK-TIPS.
