SANDY HOOK, New Jersey (PIX11) – A popular swimming and fishing beach area in New Jersey reopened today after being decimated by Superstorm Sandy. The Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook is officially back in business.
Many of its roads, historic buildings and beaches were damaged in the storm. It took six months of shoveling to get the Monmouth County park back in workable shape.
Sandy hook is known as a prime spot for bluefish and striped bass in spring.
The parks six public beaches are open for walking and fishing, but not for swimming just yet. Many of the beaches are expected to be open by memorial day weekend.
