READINGTON, New Jersey (PIX11) – A compromise has been reached over a controversial strapless dress ban at a New Jersey middle school. Girls at Readington Middle School will still not be allowed to wear a strapless dress at their eighth grade dance in June. They will, however, be allowed to wear a single clear or spaghetti strap to reduce the risk of a “wardrobe malfunction.”

The decision was reached at a heated school board meeting Wednesday night. Parents and student opposed to the idea argued the ban had been imposed by the principal suddenly, and without warning or time for feedback.

Adding to the controversy, the principal initially called strapless dresses “distracting” when she imposed the ban. That led some parents to call the move sexist.

The board had to vote three times before reaching the compromise. Parents who already bought their daughters dresses will have to have them altered.
