EAST ROCKAWAY, Queens (PIX11) – East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School finally re-opened today–exactly six months after Superstorm Sandy left the school under five feet of water.
The gym , locker rooms and library were all damaged in the storm. Officials estimate the damage at $10 million.
“For six months, in another school district, in rented space as you can imagine was quite a challenge,” said Principal Joe Spero.
Students were also excited to return, especially seniors, who wore “Rock the Return” shirts for the occasion.
Insurance helped cover some of the repair bills, but school leaders hope FEMA will cover the rest.
