QUEENS (PIX11)- Even from the outside V.I.P foods in Ridgewood could cause a passerby to lose their appetite.
“It looks scary. It looks unsanitized, it needs to be cleaned.”
But according to reports the inside might make you lose your lunch.
The Food and Drug Administration seized about $1 million of inventory because the building was overrun with rodents.
“I’ll be out at night since I work and I see a lot of rats and a lot of mice too.”
According to the complaint, inspectors first noticed the problem back in October. They say there were droppings throughout the facility and gnawed containers of food. Now V.I.P told them they’d fixed the problem back in February, but when inspectors returned to the site they say they found the same problems.
In a statement U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said, “V.I.P.’s warehouse was a picnic ground for rodents, and the company failed utterly in its obligation to provide food deemed safe for human consumption.”
The company which owns KoJel Kosher foods, makes things like instant pudding and hot chocolate mix and sits just across the street from a supermarket.
“It is nasty because I do like pudding, so that’s really disgusting.”
“Ooohhh, that’s terrible, it’s nasty, people could get sick.”
The company was cited for spilled food and for failing to seal gaps in the doors and screen windows- where the rodents could have gotten in.
V.I.P. Foods did not return our calls for comment.
