Almira Ribic, a truck driver, was stranded for an hour and a half in the cab of her tractor-trailer Monday morningt as it dangled over the Virginia River on the Monitor-Merrimac bridge in Newport News, Virginia.
Firefighters rescued the 43-year-old woman by rappelling from an elevated platform and pulling her through the drivers side window. But she was terrified, afraid to look down at the river, the broken windshield the only thing supporting her weight.
She called her 24-year-old son while trapped in the cab, and he told reporters he knew that conversation could have been their last.
She was rescued, but she’s not out of the woods. Virginia State police fined her and charged her with reckless driving.
Her family says they don’t care. They’re just glad that she is OK.
