Cuba said today it will turn over to the United States a couple who is accused of kidnapping their own children from the mother’s parents and fleeing by sailboat to Havana.
The two brothers, four year old Cole and two year old Chase Hakken have been the subject of an international search since their father took them from their grandmother’s home outside Tampa, Florida.
Authorities say the grandmother told them her son-in-law tied her up, then made off with the boys in her car. The car was later found abandoned.
An amber alert went out.
The boys turned up in Cuba, on a 25 foot sailboat that the parents either bought or took from a slip in a Florida marina.
Cuba has cooperated fully with the United States, and has promised to return the family, even though the two countries do not have an extradition treaty.
There is a warrant out for the arrest of the father on charges of kidnapping and child neglect.
The parents lost custody of their children last year after the father was arrested on drug possession charges.
Authorities believe the children will be returned to the care of their grandmother.
