ISTANBUL, Turkey (PIX11) – Secretary of State John Kerry took time to honor six americans killed in Afghanistan this weekend, including a young diplomat. He made stopped to make a public statement while participating in peace talks in Istanbul.
Anne Smedinghoff was one of five killed Saturday in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan. Kerry says he met the foreign service worker less than a month ago, and said she died trying to help those less fortunate.
“I want to emphasize that Anne was everything that is right about our foreign service,” Kerry said. “She was smart, capable, committed to our country. I had the privilege of meeting her and Mr. Foreign Minister just a few days ago when I was in Afghanistan, she was part of my team.”
Smedinghoff was part of a team trying to deliver books to a local school.
Another American was killed in a separate attack on Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths to six. It was the deadliest day for Americans in the war in eight months.
