New York State Sen. Malcolm Smith of Queens and City Councilman Dan Halloran were arrested Tuesday after authorities say the pair attempted to bribe elected officials in a plot to buy Smith a spot on the Republican ballot in the 2013 mayoral election.
Of the officials reportedly involved in the bribery plot included Bronx Republican Chairman Jay Savino and Queens GOP vice chairman Vincent Tabone. Both men, along with two others were taken into custody by FBI agents..
According to authorities, Smith, who was arrested at his Queens home in the early hours of Tuesday, had planned to run on the Republican ballot after getting the necessary backing of 3 of the 5 borough party leaders. Buying their support would have reportedly cleared the way for the Democratic to run as a GOP candidate without changing his party affiliation.
Smith and Halloran face a slew of corruption charges. Further details on their arrests and the alleged bribery plot will be announced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmerat were also placed under arrest, in connection with the same investigation.
