Researchers have found that the virus that causes cold sores, and other viruses or bacterial infections, may be associated with memory loss.

A long-term study of a group of people in one neighborhood of New York City found that those with higher levels of antibodies in their blood were more likely to have cognitive problems, compared to people with lower levels.

Those who had higher levels of infection had a 25 percent increase in the risk of a low score on a common test of cognition — called the mini-mental state examination.

Critics claim there’s no direct cause and effect here and more work needs to be done to take a closer look at this possible connection.
