(Castel Gandolfo, Italy) – PIX 11 paid a visit to the former Pope’s temporary retirement residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy–as the man who replaced him made plans to pay his respects Friday.

Pope Francis I–formerly known as Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires–began his first day Thursday as the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church visiting one of Rome’s largest churches–Basilica di Santa Maria. He brought flowers to pay homage to the Blessed Mother and shook hands with well-wishers.

Francis I later said Mass at the Sistine Chapel with the 114 other Cardinals who elected him Wednesday evening.

On Friday–Pope Francis is expected to travel to Castel Gandolfo, the papal retreat south of Rome–to visit Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI–who retired two weeks ago, citing his diminshed strength of body and mind.
