There were tears of joy from Shelly Guadalupe inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Jorge Mario Borgoglio now Pope Francis.

“I’m just overwhelmed,” said Guadalupe, of Puerto Rico.

As they watched it live on a flat screen TV inside the Cathedral, there were screams from the crowd for the first Holy Father chosen from Latin America

Pope Francis’ roots resonate with New Yorkers. He is also of Italian heritage.

“It’s good, it’s about time, we need someone from our side now,” said Christina Bongiovanni of Queens.

The day though did not end without disappointment from many New Yorkers hoping it could have been New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan as the next Pope.

“I was disappointed,” said Jonathan Fuchs of Park Slope, Brooklyn, “I’m a New Yorker, I was born and raised in this city always root for the home team,” .

A mass capped off the day at St. Patrick’s. The Monsignor not shying away from discussing the difficult road the newest Pope has ahead of him.

Catholics prayed inside the Cathedral for their new leader. As for their beloved Cardinal Dolan, some New Yorkers say don’t give up on him, yet.

“That’s from the Brooklyn Dodgers, wait till next year, wait till the next Pope is selected,” added Fuchs.
