He was determined to leave the game on his own terms.
Back in May, his retirement became a water cooler topic after he tore a ligament in his right knee. But Mariano Rivera is a fighter, and arguably the best relief pitcher to ever play the game of baseball.
He made a promise to his fans, that he would return after his injury, ready to play the 2013 season.
Saturday morning during a press conference, he reminded us all of that promise, but also, of his decision to exit the game shortly after.
“After this year, I will be retired,” Rivera said. “There’s nothing left. I did everything and I’m proud of it.”
And so are we, and so is our city, for a player that brought home five world titles.
